The three things that hold most students back
Translating in your head
Most students who are stuck are not short of vocabulary. They are converting every sentence from English before they speak, and the exam clock does not allow for it. We work on producing Spanish directly, which feels uncomfortable for a few weeks and then stops feeling like anything at all.
The speaking exam
This is where I see the biggest grade movement. The photo card and role play reward preparation more than talent, and both can be rehearsed until they are routine. I record practice attempts so you can hear the difference across a term rather than take my word for it.
Tenses under pressure
Preterite against imperfect, and knowing when a subjunctive is expected, is where higher tier papers separate a grade 5 from a grade 7. We drill these against real past paper questions rather than in isolation.

Frequently asked
Which board does my child’s school use?
Most Swansea comprehensives follow WJEC or Eduqas, but not all, and some independent schools use AQA or Edexcel. If you are not sure, the front of any past paper your child has been given will say. I cover all four.
My child is in Year 9 and already behind. Is it too early?
Year 9 is the easiest point to fix foundations, because there is no exam pressure yet and we can slow down on tenses without losing time. Starting early is cheaper than catching up in Year 11.
Can you help with just the speaking exam?
Yes, and a fair number of students come to me for exactly that. Four to six sessions before the speaking window is usually enough to make a visible difference.
How much homework do you set?
About thirty minutes a week. It is always specific and always marked. I would rather set one task that gets done than five that do not.
Do parents get updates?
Yes. I send a short written summary every fourth lesson so you know where things stand well before results day.
